I would say Prophecies with the problem being that there are fewer and fewer people to partner with for many of the missions. But Prophecies is the first, and the best and has the most gentle learning curve.
If you want full features, I would go for Nightfall. The Hero part of the game makes a big difference. Factions would be my last choice although some of the skills are invaluable. And if you want to play GW:EN, you need one of the other three. |

Buy Prophecies, it's got the gentlest learning curve of the bunch and is a good introduction to the game. If you enjoy it, get Nightfall for heroes, then Factions and GWEN when you want more stuff to do and things to acquire.

If you do get Prophecies, make sure to explore all of pre-Searing first. Don't be a bum-rusher to do the Academy quest. Beyond that, I will not speak.

No, you have to have one of those to play GW:EN.

GWEN is an expansion, you need at least one campaign to be able to play it. Any of the three campaigns, though it fits best with prophecies, it shares the same continent and much of the lore, so it really does extend the campaign. If you were to go to gwen from factions you would be feeling you are entering a different game. Its just not as consistent with factions and nightfall as with prophecies.
If you want eye of the north than you should probably buy the guild wars platinum edition. It contains the prophecies campaign and the eye of the north expansion, and it is much cheaper than buying the campaign and expansion seperately, at least in stores here where i live. |

I'd go with Nightfall first, so you'll be able to obtain your customizable hero's earlier, who really do work a lot better than most real people ('cept guildies, guildies rock ). I've used them all the way through all the campaigns, along with a few regular henchmen, and it's much more convienient.

I'd say if you want to get to gw:en quicker, then factions, as it levels you up much faster.
Otherwise the best one for a starting player would have to be prophecies, it's not too fast and the story is amazing.

I'd DEFINITELY start out with Prophecies, and like others have said don't rush to get out of Pre-Searing (the Newbie Land).

I agree with everyone that said start with prophecies...
I started out with Nightfall and I am almost finish with the game but find myself not able to farm with core&nightfall skills... looking at builds I find most farming build has alot of prophecies skills in them... |
